So to start some activity here: can anyone give me some advise for a hotel room for two nights in the third week in August? Arriving with Amtrak in Emeryville and departing two days later. Would prefer a good connection via BART to the city. Starwood is my favourite chain, Crowne Plaza would do, too. Price range should be not more than 150$ per night.

Westin St. Francis at Union Square has some nice endless weekend rates. I am in one for $119 during the second weekend in August.

Kathy: don't despair! We will be there 7/28-30th! Staying at Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf...have tickets to Beach Blanket Babylon. This will be our third time there and we just keep coming back for more! Looking forward to SF.

Alternatively, and probably more convenient: AMTRAK has a bus connection from the Emeryville station to downtown S.F., the Financial District (stops at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero...which is steps away from a BART station), Ferry Building, S.F.Shopping Center (Market & Powell), and Fisherman's Wharf (Pier 39). The bus meets each train.

I looked at www.biddingfortravel.com and noticed that there are lots of downtown San Francisco hotel rooms going for $55 to $65 per night on Priceline. And rooms at the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero as low as $38 to $40 per night!

I think you've already heard some good ideas on how to get from Emeryville Amtrak to downtown SF, but I thought I'd throw out one more. I just started working in Emeryville and they have this neat thing called the Emery-Go-Round. It's a free bus/shuttle service that has several routes going between Emeryville shops/businesses and the McArthur BART station.
