SFO Gate Explorer

Gate Explorer | San Francisco International Airport

SFO Gate Explorer

The SFO Gate Explorer is a unique amenity that grants you access to the secure side of the airport. With SFO Gate Explorer, you can bring or meet friends and family at the gate, check out the latest exhibits and art pieces from the award-winning SFO Museum, and take in SFOs world-class shopping and dining.

  • You can apply for a SFO Gate Explorer pass up to 30 days in advance of your visit.
  • Same-day applications are accepted.
  • Check that your information is accurate and provide your full legal name, date of birth, and sex, exactly as they appear on your government-issued ID.
  • Each SFO Gate Explorer applicant must submit a Gate Explorer application. Applications for minors under the age of 18 are permitted with an adult over the age of 18 listed on the application. Approved minors must remain under adult escort during their Gate Explorer visit.
Step 2: Wait for Approval
Your application will be reviewed and approved by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Entrance into the secure side of the airport is subject to TSA screening and approval. Here's what you can expect:
  • Approved: After midnight on the day of your visit, you will receive an email with your SFO Gate Explorer.
  • Denied: After midnight on the day of your request, you will receive notice of ineligibility for the program.
Step 3: Arrive with your SFO Gate Explorer
Bring your SFO Gate Explorer (digital or printed) to scan at your selected SFO Checkpoint. Be prepared to present your SFO Gate Explorer and TSA-approved photo ID to the TSA officer. Those without a valid SFO Gate Explorer will be denied entry.

Every now and then I buy a refundable ticket, go through security, and immediately cancel that ticket. Plans can change, you see.

I'm not sure that this SFO Gate Explorer would be any easier than changing one's plans with a refundable ticket.

This sounds like a new version of the old "gate pass", with greater documentation and advance planning now required.

It would not be easier if you have Precheck. It would be "not easier"

To assist a mobility-impaired friend or relative is the only instance I can think of using this - well, unless some fabulous restaurant opened making the airport parking or BART ride worth it. Or some stooopid FTer saying "do you want to meet during my connection?"

Southwest has never complained. I give them plenty of real business.

Looks like there is no charge for this, is that the case?
