If your friend is arriving on BA and buys a valid connection on AA, even on a separate ticket, AA/oneworld policies require the delayed carrier to take care of rebooking at no cost.

(AA does fly SFO-LAX and often prices the same as Southwest.)
It might be too late for the OP, but that is very good advice. Ideally you buy the BA/AA itinerary as a single ticket. Then you can really tighten up the connection time, knowing that with any delay you likely will just get pushed to the next AA flight to LAX. Nothing at all wrong with Southwest, but here AA would have been the better choice if the fares were close.

I have another SFO int'l to domestic connection question as well.

I'm scheduled to land at SFO at 12:30 pm on Air New Zealand #8 (777-300) and I am hoping to make a 1:45 pm US Airways flight to Philadelphia. If I carry on and check in online for US, will I be able to make this flight? I am a US citizen and date of travel is Saturday, September 20. Other option is 4 pm United but does not put me in PHL until 12:30 am.

Thanks

If you arrive on time, this should be no problem. However, it gets a little dicey if you come in after 12:45 pm. Then delays at Immigration or T1 security could blow the deal.

Do you have Global Entry? That would pretty much eliminate the Immigration risk. SFO Immigration is usually pretty fast, but there is always the possibility of delay if several large planes arrive around the same time.

No unfortunately I do not have Global Entry but it seems ANZ 8 gets in around around 20 to 30 minutes early. I'm hoping I can bolt out early and make the connection.

Odds are in your favor. I've gone through SFO Immigration over a dozen times; not once has there been any serious delay in the regular lines. I'm sure it happens from time to time, but not very often. I have seen T1 security take as much as 30 minutes, but there too, I think the odds are for something much less than that.

Best of luck! Please let us know how it goes.
