Ferry between SF and Sausalito

From reading thru FT threads, I have discovered that I should take the sunset ferry from SF to Sausalito.

I am planning on taking the 7:10pm from the ferry building and then just staying on the boat and returning back to the ferry building. I went to Sausalito during my last trip but the trip was during the day.

Can you just stay on board?

Is this a good time to leave San Francisco or should I go earlier or later?

Thanks!

Good question. You'll have to pay for the RT of course. They normally empty the boat and clean up for 5 mins. GGT employees are a pretty open minded bunch. If you are at all infirm, I doubt they'll make you disembark. You might have to walk the gangplank and get back on if you're hale and healthy. wj

I often recommend taking the ferries. Another option is to take the Tiburon ferry, have lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants on the docks, and take the ferry back to SF.

If I recall correctly the Tiburon ferry also slides past the large prison known as San Quentin? Quite a sight from the waterside!

The OP didn't specify the time of year that we were taking the ferry. The Bay area has far earlier sunsets in the winter than summer so I would be mindful of both the sunset time and the weather report...

The LARKSPUR Ferry goes by SAN QUENTIN. Tiburon is smaller and less visited with better views than Sausalito. Folsom is around 30 miles E of Sacramento and a great little town as well. There will be no ferries there, however. wj

I noticed that a tour to Sausalito.. you can opt to take the ferry back at your own leisure at an added cost.. something like $12 pp..

I heard the tour was highly recommended.. although, we never did do the tour..

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. However, it was to foggy during the time I was there to enjoy an early evening ferry ride to see the lights.
Next time!
