Are there any airports in San Francisco county?

SFO is in San Mateo county. San Francisco county is just the north end of the peninsula.

It's weird, because most counties have at least one small GA airport, even rural counties in flyover country.

Only heliports. The same is true for New York County.

We had one, once: Crissy Field, an Army airfield which ceased ops. in 1974.

San Francisco is the only coterminous City and County in the State.

Technically, SFO is on SF county land and is considered to be a part of the City and County of SF

I'm fairly sure that I read there is a narrow strip that is SF which extends down to and then enlarges to include SFO. But I can't find an official document to support that, maybe someone else can.

As the SF Airport Commission operates SFO, in San Mateo County, San Francisco Police/Fire Departments provide basic services.

Of course, Treasure Island was planned to have SF's airport before the military took it during WWII--and, IIRC, a sliver of Alameda NAS, which has still-visible landing strips, is in San Francisco.

And major investigations on airport property are handled by detectives from the San Mateo County Sheriff.

North County Investigation Unit - (650) 821-6200.
Investigates crimes committed on San Francisco International Airport property, including North County communities, and coordinates with surrounding city police departments in investigation of airport-related crimes that extend into surrounding communities. The Unit also coordinates with multi-jurisdictional task forces investigating cargo theft, drug trafficking and money laundering operations targeting the Airport and its customers.

Why is this a concern? Where would you put an airport in SF County? One could call it San Mateo Airport, but that has drawbacks in attracting airlines, passengers, etc. The Seattle-Tacoma Airport is not in either city, and Univeral Studios Hollywood is not in Hollywood, but one must roll with the punches.

It's not weird at all if you understand the small size and topography of the City and County of San Francisco. Where exactly would you put an airport? And yes, SFO is technically in SF.

There is a hang glider field at Ft. Funston. It probably has more arrivals and departures than most local airports.

Treasure Island still hosts "Clipper Cove" from whence Juan Tripp's American Airlines Yankee Clippers flew all over the Pacific. The still existing terminal building was featured in "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
