Don't know about online codes because I prefer to buy the CD, work offline, and store my tax data on my home PC (though I do use e-filing).
Every year in December I get the new CDs in the mail and throw them out. Why?
Because in January and February the big box retailers always run great promos. Last year we got a free CD ($15 max) from Best Buy when we bought TaxCut. I have also seen promos offering jump drives, $10 off coupons, etc. and of course lots of free useless software (after cumbersome rebates).
So I would never buy direct from the software publisher as I would miss out on a promo. But YMMV.

My approach as well. I pick up TurboTax at Costco each year for much less than the online price. It's also easier to deal with the CD-ROM rather than the download or web versions.

I don't know which variety you need, but Turbo Tax Deluxe w/State is around $45.
Deal 1) If you get it from Buy.com, you can get $20 off a $50 purchase by using google checkout, and free shipping. So you'll need to pick a $5 item as well, such as blank CDs or DVDs. http://www.buy.com/corp/promos/google_offer.asp
Deal 2) There's a Staples 12% off coupon (in-store purchase only) through 12/23. Total spent $39.60
http://forums.slickdeals.net/attachm...0&d=1164805962
Deal 3) There's also a coupon for $20 off $150 purchase at Staples.com (enter coupon code 99523), plus free shipping.
If you open a Staples Rewards account (free), you also get 2% back on the pre-rebate totals. Total spent: under $25
You can maximize the discount by adding items to your order that are free-after-rebate. If you don't already know, Staples EasyRebates are the best out there. You don't have to mail any forms or UPC cutouts. It's all done on-line and is extremely reliable.
Item 663114, $45 Turbo Tax Deluxe w/State

Some free-after-rebate items for padding:

Item 650830 Quicken, $30 but free after EasyRebate

Last night I actually looked at this last night at both Officemax and Target. There are 3 versions now.
Office Max and Target
Basic Federal
15 and 15
Federal plus State
29.99 and 29.99
Federal+ State + E-files for both state and feds included
59.99 and 54.99
And there were no freebes yet. Usually atleast here in MN we can get Microsoft Money Deluxe for free after rebate, there is also usually a Norton Internet Securtiy in there as well.

Or prepare and file for free...
The IRS also has an agreement not to create it's own software, so long as software manufacturers make it available for free to a large percentage of taxpayers, but not everyone. If anything, pass it along to people who know who could use it.
The sites are usually available end of January from irs.gov website:
================================================
Free File is a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service and the Free File Alliance, a coalition of tax preparation software manufacturers who make their software products available to eligible taxpayers for free and provide free Federal return electronic filing. The Free File software products are the same as their commercial products.
For 2007, taxpayers who earn $52,000 or less will be able to find a Free File offer for which they are eligible. This means 70 percent of all taxpayers – 93 million people – will be eligible for Free File.

state farm customers also get free turbo tax (online). at least the past couples they have. this includes state farm credit cards holders. I am not a state farm insurance customer but I do have a state farm visa. when you log in online to your account there is a link to turbotax, for free access. I used it last year and it looks like the same deal is available for 2006 tax season.
