e-rewards and aol earn now
Disclaimer - I did a quick search, but did not find the answer in SPAM...
I'm currently at $42, but have not yet done the aol trail for $15. Can anyone think of why I shouldn't do this? I think there is no cost to me if I cancel in 30 days. Aside from having to give them a credit card number and later cancel, is there any downside? Do I have to actually download or use the program?

Key phrase - WILL AOL LET YOU QUIT?
A couple years ago the only way I could quit was to close my checking account. The SOB's would not close my AOL account.
Be careful if you join.

A lot of people had difficulty cancelling AOL. They would use high pressure sales tactics to keep you as a member. A few states' Attorneys General filed consumer complaints against them and AOL has pledged to change their practices. Supposedly they will not do anything to stop you from cancelling.
Personally, when I cancelled AOL 2 1/2 years ago I had absolutely no problems.

Right now AOL is threating to send me to collections over an account I cancelled with them. I got this account to get the $15 from erewards and I would never do it again.

Heed the Advice of the Others
Same problems for me, I signed up for AOL for Mypoints. Luckily I used one of those prepaid credit cards that only had about $20 on it. I cancelled but about 3 months later started getting letters that my credit card wasn't allowing them to bill the monthly fee. After MANY calls & letters (they have some of the most rude CS agents) and way more time spent than I want to think about (literally hours), I guess I'm off the hook--haven't heard from them in about 10 months now.

While trying to close the account is certainly a problem (try contacting your bank and informing them automatic debits from your checking account shall no longer be honored/authorized), another problem will be trying to get the software off your computer!
I had an AOL account and after cancelling the account and using the Windows "remove software" tool, the program in full working order would continue to be available!
The way I got rid of the software was to never load AOL on my new computer!!!

When you cancel with AOL, be sure to have it documented in writing. It will help, in case of future billing charges.
