You do know that anyone (anyone with a mobile phone) can get GMail without an invite now, don't you?

But if you don't have a cell phone, you can't get an account for free, apparently. You can only get an account by being invited through an e-mail from someone who DOES have any account.

Can I sign up without the invitation code? Or without a mobile phone?
Answer

You need to receive and enter a special invitation code in order to create an account. Currently, we are only sending these codes as text messages to US mobile phones. So you will need to have a mobile phone with text message capabilities (most phones have this) and the invitation code itself.
One of the reasons we are offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse. Spam and abuse protection are two things we take very seriously, and our users have been very happy with the small amount of spam they've received in their Gmail accounts. We take many measures to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending their spam messages, getting these messages delivered, or even obtaining a Gmail account (spammers will often use many different accounts to send spam). Sending invitation codes to mobile phones via SMS is one way to address this, as the number of accounts per phone number can be limited.

If you want to open an account a different way, you may want to ask a friend with a mobile phone to receive an invitation code for you or to ask someone you know who already has a Gmail account to email you an invitation.
So I guess you're right - cell phone or invite.

I still have 40 invites left... as of 5pm EST!

Just send me your email address, and I will send invite. NO codes, just invite direct from GMAIL.

What's the big deal about a Gmail account? I have one but almost never use it, people don't like to email me at it due to google's spyware.

Gmail offers user names that would not be avail on yahoo/hotmail. Plus the features are really user friendly... Hey not everything is for everybody...

You dont think the other web based email services are doing similar database marketing inquiries to your email? Granted Google is much more upfront about it, but just about every web site monitors and records transactions and related data. This is in turn used for a range of marketing functions.

I know what spyware is. I also know that gmail is not spyware. They do not track your online habits, they scan the incoming emails to insert context-appropriate ads. Anyone who's bothered by this should not be sending plain text emails, as the email is already being scanned by anti-virus and anti-spam, as well as being transmitted to dozens of machines you don't own.
