I only had 5000+ miles with United that were due to expire in 3 weeks.
There was no way I was going to able to use them and was resigned to them just being wasted.
Out of nowhere ,United offered me several magazine choices for my miles.
I thought that was pretty classy of them and picked 5 magazines I really liked.
Now I just hope they come.

Fact is, ANY kind of redemption OR earning will reset the expiration clock (to a year and a half from the current date) on United Mileage Plus miles. (Also true of some, but not all, other programs, though the expiration timeframe is sometimes shorter or longer than United's.)
A perusal of the NUMEROUS earning/redemption opportunities on United's website, and/or a perusal of the existing thread(s) in the United Mileage Plus forum on how to prevent your miles from expiring, would have given you dozens of other ideas (most of which do NOT even involve flying). Example: donate a small number of miles (say, 1,000) and the expiration on the remaining 4,000 is instantly reset to one and a half years in the future.
Anyhow, you may be happy with your decision if you wanted the magazines anyway, but I hate to see such ideas (based on inadequate knowledge/research) promoted to other readers of this forum. Do your homework first, people!!!

Hate to break it to you now that it's too late, but you should have done a bit of research before signing up for such a deal.

So what is the point of extending the expiration of these miles? Why give up 20% of them just to extend the remaining 4K, as noted in your example?
In fact, with balances in that range (nowhere near enough for a flight), I think this is a perfectly acceptable solution and would recommend this to others in a similar situation.

I did the exact same thing with my Alaskan Air miles a few years ago. I flew them just once from MIA, got my miles & later traded them for some mags. At that time I was starting to cut back my business flying and I started to burn up my miles I had in other programs.
