It's VERY frustrating that promo codes can no longer be used towards the purchase of gift cards and e-gift cards. This was a common tactic I first learned here on FT. One would pre-purchase "credit" in advance through general gift cards to restaurant.com, preferably at the highest 80% or 90% discounts. Then, this credit would be used as a payment form when it came time to buy certs to individual restaurants. However, I tried doing this today, as I do about 2-3 times per year, with the current 80% code (HOT), and it no longer works.

I have found that you can still buy the eGift Cards with 70% promo codes, just not the 80% ones.

One thing that I've noticed in my area is that the hottest restaurants tend to be "sold out" when the 80% discounts hit.

So, I grab the 60% ones. They tend to hit just after ALL the restaurants have miraculously gotten new certs for sale. But, as I'm sure has been mentioned in the past 66 pages, be sure to read the specific restrictions for specific restaurants BEFORE hitting the purchase button.

Even at 60% off it's still a good deal; $4 for $25 off a meal. I tend not to buy the ones where a $50 purchase is required. It can be quite nice. We went out for our anniversary with a restaurant.com cert, and when all was said and done, we paid $25 for the cert, wine and two very nice Vietnamese dinners. That included the 18% tip, of course.
