Mypoints to Marriott--Is it worth it?

I have redeemed my points for Marriott certs (1750 mypoints = 1000 Marriott pts).

First of all is it worth it? Second, it is taking forever for the completion. I do not even know how this works. They never asked for my Marriott account, so I guess they will mail me 1000 Marriott pts cert. I have been waiting for this for over 2 weeks now.

Anyone has any experience?

I have redeemed MyPoints for over 25,000 Marriott points - I think it is worth it for me.

They send you a certificate that you fill in with your name, address and MR#.

They will take anywhere from two to six weeks to get the certificate to you so, be patient

For what it's worth, Marriott pretty much values its points at 1,000 points = $10. You are able to buy points directly from Marriott Rewards when you are within 10% of the reward you want to redeem.

Hope this helps...

Thus 1,750 Mypoints would equal $10 in Mariott Rewards dollars. Since 1,400 Mypoits = $10 Walmart dollars, why would anyone want to go the Mariott Rewards route?

Because you can't spend Wal-Mart dollars at Marriott, perhaps?

Well, if Marriott values their points at 1.0 cents each, clearly they must be worth less than that. I happen to value Marriott points at 0.87 cents each and moved a number of MyPoints to Marriott points over the past two years. There isn't much of a difference between moving them to Marriott and moving them to Hilton (I value HHonors points at 0.55 cents each, but have far more of these than Marriott points). Clearly, the deal for Wal-Mart dollars is somewhat better, but I'd rather have the points.

Rather then getting Marriott points, for 3,000 mypoints you can get a $25 Marriot Gift check...FWIW, a better deal that can be used at any Marriott property for any purchase or toward the room rate.

In all of these discussions of "what is a point worth" I think people forget that each person determins their own value. When you look at the higher Marriott awards the "value" of a point is worth quite a bit more than 1 cent, whereas the value for many of the lower rewards is quite a bit less than 1 cent.

One thing to consider (and I think you hit right on it, MileKing) is that Marriott points are actually pretty difficult to accumulate. Lately Marriott's specials have been stay x nights, get a free couple of free weekend nights at lower price hotels; if anything, these specials make it even harder to accumulate points. And Marriott doesn't have a lot of partners.
