MyPoints Travel e-mail
I was wondering if anyone has heard or used Travlers Advantage. I got an e-mail from my points and it says you get a free companion ticket. I wonder if it's for real?

There are always so many restrictions on these type of certificates. I have NEVER been able to use one. It is cheaper to buy two advanced fare tickets than a full price with a companion fare. I know some people have used them in the past, but not with great ease. I have one form GM Mastercard that just expired. I had a full year to try and use it and it never worked out.

However - the companion ticket that they give you is, in my opinion, worthless. In fact, if you want to join, email me and I'll check - they used to have a referral bonus. Maybe we could do a conga line.

If you want 5% cash back on travel, I'd recommend the USAA Visa or MC for no-fee and you'll get the 5% when you use their travel service (probably the same reservationists at TA).
Call USAA at 1-800-365-8722; and no, you don't need to be military for USAA banking services. That restriction is for insurance only. Federal EO law forbids banking restrictions based upon demographics.

I also think they're worthless. I signed up a few years ago and then cancelled. No problems at that time, but out of a clear blue sky several years later there was a charge from them on my credit card. Couldn't tell what it was for until I called my bank card company and they said "Travelers Advantage". Had to dispute it to get it off, as well.

Interesting to hear - I have always gotten my checks from them. I question a little whether it is worth the annual fee (I think around $59), but if you spend a reasonable amount of time in hotels that will be covered quickly. My only problem with customer service has been when I've tried to cancel - that is a word they don't like.
They do have a 3 month trial for $1 - and they give you a couple coupons for 10% on hotels. If you think you are planning an expensive hotel stay, especially if you are including an airline flight for a family, it would probably be a good start.
As a travel agent they don't get any great internet deals, but pretty much can match whatever you can get through normal booking engines.

I also find them worthless. To get the 5%, you need to book thru them and I had always been able to beat their prices by more than 5%, sometimes a whole lot more than 5%.
The first time I tried to cancel, they gave me for free, several 15% rebate coupons, I was never able to use them because their prices were a lot more than the 15% I was able to get via a simple telephone call to the hotel.

Well, I've used Travelers Advantage for about three years now, and I do enjoy getting the 5% back. The CSRs experience level and helpfulness is erratic. I only call their reservation line when I'm not able to book a reservation via their web site. Their fares have been comparable with what I have found on Orbitz, and since the majority of my travel is for business, it's worked out fine.
That's changing now that my company requires me to use American Express One for travel. Now I have the benefit of paying a fee for the fares and itineraries that I've found on the internet. In fact, sometimes the fares that I've found on the internet are lower than American Express.
