Start date for AAdvantage miles is now moved back to January 7, 2003!
From the e-rewards site:

Arrrrgh! I was hoping to top off my AAdvantage account on 1/3/2003 and then book an award. Now I hafta wait longer! *END OF RANT*------------------

So I examined the e-rewards program information. You can earn points till December 31, 2002, and you have till March 31, 2003 to redeem those points. However, any points you earn in 2003 will be redeemable starting on January 1, 2004. You cannot redeem 2003 points this year.
Bummer.
