Ryanair cabin baggage allowance?

I've booked some Ryanair flights for June (Stansted-Tampere, Stockholm-Lubeck and Lubeck-Stansted). I am puzzled about the cabin baggage allowance - Ryanair say the dimensions should be no more than 55 x 40 x 20 cm, but I can't buy any luggage to these specs - most cabin bags seems to be at least 23 cm wide. Do Ryanair actually mean that dimensions should add up to 115cm, like most of the other airlines?

And what about things that most other airlines accept in the cabin - duty-free bags, small handbags, coats, etc? Are they allowed or not?

Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to FT!

I've seen Ryanair make people check things because they were too heavy, I've never seen them get the tape measure out, so I doubt you'll run into problems over those extra 3 cm.

Small additional items are OK in my experience.

Watch it at LBC - they've become wise to people offloading their heavy books and laptops onto (non-flying) relatives and friends, and will sometimes do spot checks at the security point using (wait for this!) a set of domestic bathroom scales. Not kidding. That's LBC for you... (one of the most "mickey mouse" aiports I've ever come across - and that's probably an insult to Mickey!)

It's been a while since I've taken Ryanair, but I know various low-cost and legacy airlines alike have sizing devices at various airports. Does Ryanair not do that?

They've got them at STN - but I've never seen them actually use them. It's generally just a quick visual inspection, and if it looks "right" you can take it on board.

They don't have them at LBC, which is the only other Ryanair airport I ever use (try to avoid Ryanair but no one else goes to LBC...)
