In the scheme of life, this is a minor inconvenience. A headache? Of course. But hardly a nightmare.

If just exceeding the limits insignificantly, I would take the chance that the gate agents will not notice. My experience with bagback slightly larger than allowed is that no one notice or take action. Of course, if obvious that your carry-on bags exceed the limits, gate agents will make you pay for check-in of the bags (and most likely put them in the hold).
