SVO 3 Open Date Update?
As I sit in the outdated DATE lounge at SVO2 and bear the sound of patrons yelling above the tv's and the horrid announcements for departing flights, my mind turns towards my next trip here in mid June. Might I come into the new SVO3 terminal? ELITEGOLDTRAVELLER...any update?
On the good side, DL31 is full in the back today and I gladly traded my exit row seat half way back for 1B. It's been a tough week in Siberia (anyone hear about the pizza guy going to jail?) so a comfy ride home will be much appreciated.
So, any updates from our regulars about SVO3? The kind woman at the door of the lounge just rolled her eyes and asked for my invitation. Zhizen eta zhizen...

According to their site, they began testing on April 2. "Testing will last 7 months and passenger service is expected to begin in October 2009."
So, by Christmas, there's at least a 50% chance of it being open.

I think the last I heard it was this November (this comes from a station manager of a Skyteam carrier that is moving to T3).
The US-bound flights will move to T3 as soon as the terminal is certified by the FAA. (They now hope to complete the certification process in time for the T3 opening, so SU and DL will not have to stay in T2 any longer once T3 is up and running)

Gotta love that DATE lounge. I assume they still have the WiFi disconnected there? One of these trips I'm going to run in to you there, the odds are in our favor.

a quick update
This is from an Aeroflot's internal publication. The draft of the big move seems to have been approved in May. (Oh, and it's now Terminal D, not T3 or Terminal A as it was known earlier)
Stage 1: Sept 1-20. Domestic flts move from SVO1 to Terminal D. The first 7 days will see 7 flts to the Russian Far East move over. On Sept 8-20 they'll be slowly moving westwards, transferring flts from East Siberia first, then West Siberia and finally from the European Russia, testing all the systems as they go. Provided there's no major interruption, 53 domestic flts will have moved over by Sept 20.
Stage 2: Sept 21 - Oct 27. 53 international flights "providing most transfer passengers" move over from SVO2. Maybe 10 more "if our partners agree to some minor slots adjustments".
Stage 3: Oct 28 - Nov 6. The rest of SU's international ops move over plus partner flts. Partners explicitly mentioned include both SkyTeam (DL, KE, AZ, OK, CZ - who no longer fly to Moscow, incidentally - AF and KL) and *A (LO, SK, JP) "and others".
Hope it helps.

Juicy details. Niiiice. Thank you.
"Minor adjustments" has me wondering if DL46 from ATL might land a bit earlier. Oh how I'd love to land at SVOD and immediately run over to the OVB connection. Me thinks that would be a bit more than minor though as that flight would have to land about 2 hours earlier than it already does.
With no trips back post late August for me planned (right now anyway) until Feb of 2010 I might miss out on all the fun and almost for sure delays in the planned transition. Somehow that would be just fine by me.
Thanks apoivre! As always you are the source of many useful tidbits connected to all things Russia!

There was a Moscow Times Article on the new terminal today:
Aeroflot Terminal to Open in Winter
29 June 2009By Maria Antonova / The Moscow Times
Aeroflot will move all of its flights to Sheremetyevo's glistening new Terminal 3 before switching to its winter schedule this year, CEO Vitaly Savelyev told reporters Friday after showing off the facility to visiting airline executives.
The long-awaited hub will serve as the SkyTeam alliance's base in Russia and is intended to rescue Sheremetyevo from its reputation as the capital's least modern airport.
Workers loaded dummy baggage onto conveyors at the check-in Friday, while others mopped floors or installed lights in the round-domed arrival hall. The terminal has been operating on a trial basis since April, Savelyev said. "Our goal is to set the winter schedule from the new terminal."
Aeroflot agreed to build a new hub as a condition for its membership in SkyTeam. Construction began in 2005, and the opening date has been pushed back several times.

Cloooooser. Gettiing cloooooser.....It might just happen after all it seems.
Interesting about the initial chats with Rossiya. I never really thought about another ST member in Russia but that kinda makes sense I guess.
I'm curious to see the lounges there especially.
All in all this is good news. Now we wait some more.

There's a new schedule for flights transfer to SVO3, starting on Nov 1 this time.
LED flts move over on Nov 5
OVB - on Nov 9 (woody125 ^ )
NYC (both SU and DL) on Nov 17
IAD on Nov 19
and so on.
LAX stays in SVO2 for the time being. Any other flights anyone is curious about?

Is Terminal 3 the construction going on next to Terminal 2? Or is it located in some other place?
Answered my own question - Terminal E is being built next to Terminal 2. Terminal 3 (or D) is a little further on. Here's a map (in Russian):
