What about connections to Belarus (Minsk) via DME? I'd need a visa for BY sure.. but see conflicting info about needing the Russian visa too (though this may only apply to SVO1/2 transfer)

This is true for all foreign citizens, unfortunately, and has to do with the way American airports are construction. Everyone must have a valid visa or come from a country that is part of the Visa Waiver Program to transit the U.S. because we do not separate international and domestic flights in the U.S. So everyone has to go the immigration and customs.

You need a Russian transit visa in addition to your Belorussian visa:

U.S. citizens traveling to Belarus via Russia are reminded that they must possess a Russian transit visa in addition to their Belarusian visa.

When you disembark the aircraft, you have to use Transaero's transfer desk to get your boarding pass to SIN ... they were *very* inefficient in my case: the lady took my passport and ticket and just went away for 1 1/2 hours ... I was panicking when she arrived *just* in time for the flight ... I rushed through security, found my gate and off I was ...
Revisiting this for some friends...how long was your layover you mentioned above? I have some friends flying into DME on S7 from Siberia with a connection to SQ's flight to Houston. At 1 hour 55 minutes how do you think they will do? They both speak Russian and know "the system" quite well. Just wondering how close your connection was.

Yes, I have heard that flights to MSQ actually depart the domestic side of DME.. does anyone know if other CIS flights are considered domestic as well? Someone mentioned that Kiev departed from the international terminal.

There are no border checks between Russia and Belarus, so for all intents and purposes, MSQ is a "domestic" destination, similar to how US and Canada work.
