Visa Help...
Sorry guys...I tried reading all the threads on the subject but it left me confused.
I am flying the below route and I was curious to know what kind of visa would I need. I think that trasit visa would be fine but if a tourist visa is going to work out better, I might as well go for it. Also would I need a single entry or a double entry?

It is the database used by the air carriers to determine which, if any, docs. you need in order to board your flight, so it is particularly useful.
I would not recomend relying on anecdotes from others as minor variable changes and minor bureaucratic changes at any time can change the requirements.

Sweet...thank you so much!
It seems that I don't have to worry about a visa for the first leg of my flight since I will be transiting through SVO for a few hours.
As far as the second leg, I'm planning on a stopover at SVO for 2 nights so I know I'll need a single entry visa. My question is do I apply for a transit visa ( which I believe is good for three days) or do I just go ahead an apply for the tourist visa since it's the same price.
Thanks in advance.

nasa808, I've never had experience with Russian transit visas, but I am doubtful you may get one based on your itinerary. There are several daily SU flights from Rome and to New York -- there's no need in 46 hours transit. So what you're going to do is not actually transit, it's a visit.
Do not lose time with transit visas, book a hotel in Moscow, request an invitation from them and apply for a tourist visa.

I'd also get a double entry, valid from 1 Oct until 30 October. Double entry costs the exact same as single entry and, let's say, Vesuvius explodes the morning of October 13th closing FCO and you're suddenly stuck in Moscow until the airport reopens - you've got a way into town without waiting for special consular processing until Rome reopens.

IIRC it was the case a couple years back.

The alternative is to go through a visa processing company, which increases the price and decreases the hassle. They'll provide the consulate with an "invitation letter" good for 30 days and deal with all the bureaucracy. I can't wait for the new 5-year visa scheme to be ratified!
