Fair to say that BA will be soon banned from entering RUS airspace.

Sad day for my wife - who does not support the invasion at all; and is overly p+++d off with her President - as she had planned to use SU to visit her family back in Russia. Might need to be a detour via Middle East.

Fair to assume that Aeroflot will be banned from the EU as well, similar to what happened to Belavia. Retaliation should be expected. Airliners from countries that ban Aeroflot will be banned entering Russian airspace or using their airports.

So far only 1 of 146 Aeroflot destinations affected. If a EU + UK ban, that is 60+ destinations affected. The US would count for 4 more.

They could funnel passengers via SkyTeam partners, unless they get kicked out as part of the sanctions.

I will be very curious if the US will follow suit, and if SkyTeam will really sever ties. I have a feeling this is going to ratchet up pretty quick.

And also Oneworld, too. S7 is still in Oneworld. I think they will be removed it.

I expect Russia to mirror this and ban UK aircraft from Russian airspace.

It will create significant pain for BA and Virgin flying to Japan, China and East Asia.

For Japan or Korean it might even require a stop in ANC as in 1970s.

The biggest pain will be flights to Japan. Those to China and Korea would be an extra 500-1000 miles to take a more southern route. Not insignificant.

One can have some fun using the Great Circle Mapper

LHR-ANC-HND is just around 8000 miles, that should be within the range of a 77W or 787-9 without a refuelling stop.

Yes, they should be just fine. They won't have any problem with it. They don't need stops in ANC to refuel the planes.
