UA F, EWR-BRU (UA960 on March 4)
Flew United Global First EWR-BRU on March 4. They are using Weiss. I still wonder who will be the long term caterer, as ex-EWR, the PMUA flights (ZRH and BRU) use Weiss, while the PMCO flights use Regal. I don't know who uses what on transcons. Outside of EWR, PMCO still uses Regal while PMUA uses KoshAir. Yuck! At least ZRH-EWR, UA used Schalom Catering (who LX uses), though the LX C meal (ZRH-TLV) was considerably better than the UA C meal (ZRH-EWR). I don't know who UA uses for ZRH-IAD, KoshAir or Schalom.
Anyways, F gets dinner and breakfast on this flight. Y gets dinner and a snack, and I'm not sure about C (breakfast or snack). In-flight service manager offered me everything the regular meal comes with on top of KSML because he felt bad that the KSML is so small compared to the regular meal. Very nice gesture, though couldn't do most of that obviously. Dinner Again, sorry about the quality. Here's a couple of pics though: http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4411.jpg http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4412.jpg http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4413.jpg Everything tasted good, though I wish there had been a real salad like CO offers in BF. There was a small beet salad, and that was it. Roll was cold, though not freezing. Would be nice if somehow I could get a hot roll instead. http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4414.jpg http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4416.jpg Tasted fine, but nothing special. Small also. Utterly not impressed. In fact, I've had more meat in my dinner main flying Y than I did in this meal. http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4417.jpg Tasted good, and decent size. Breakfast http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4421.jpg http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/...0/CIMG4422.jpg Egg was inedible. Felt like I was chewing rubber. I'm very easy to please, and will usually eat whatever's there. Couldn't do more than 2 bites on this. FA gave me a plate of fresh fruit which was nice-sized, great assortment, and tasted pretty good. Red grapes, watermelon, cantelope, oranges, honey dew |
Here's a clearer image of the snack on UA C, ZRH-TLV (Schalom Catering)

In my travels,
LH Y out if EWR sevres Regels (chicken) for dinner and a breakfast (not a hot one) before landing. LH Y FRA to EWR had a meal from Shofar (Frankfurt local). CO 84 Y had Regels (beef) for dinner, and a hot breakfast before landing, returning had from Hamasbia. Heard that B6 has Kosher lunch boxes for sale on the NY-FL routes. From my familys travel, SAA Y-class JNB-CPT-JNB (yes, a 2hr flight) & on BA (Comair-SA) Y-class JNB-VFA-JNB got a hot KSML out of Jo'burg (South Africa only has one Hechser) |

Could those successful in ordering kosher meals in the lounges please share the details?

Mr Japanese videoing a kosher meal on TG. Catering from Melbourne seems odd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1Q2BBvNDRw

Quick summary of my BOS-FRA-TLV-FRA-BOS trip in Business Class on Lufthansa.
4/3/12 BOS-FRA - Borenstein frozen meal under the OU. Appetizer tray was lox and some form of israeli couscous with some rolls. It was served half frozen but the couscous was ok. Main course was chicken with snow peas and potatoes. The meal came to me cold but I had them put it back in the oven to make it hot (I don't worry about stuff like double wrapping). The dessert tray was a few chocolate truffles and some form of pareve sponge cake concoction- the truffles were good, the sponge cake tasted like every other frozen sponge cake. Pre-arrival breakfast - Borenstein omlette with cheese served with warm pastries and a bagel. Dairy tray, but the baked goods were pareve. Only 4 hours or so had passed since dinner, which is clearly a problem for someone who is concerned about waiting 6 hours between meat and milk. The omelette was so so, obviously frozen. The pastries were good because they were warm. 4/4/12- FRA-TLV - This meal came from Sohar's catering in Frankfurt which is under the local beit dein (it's Beit Yosef for those who care). The appetizer tray was an arugala salad and a small piece of lox. Also on the tray was some more sponge cake. The main course was chicken and carrots with boiled potatoes. The foil wrapping indicated it was kosher for passover (non-gebrokts). 4/16/12 TLV-FRA - This meal came from Hamasbia under the Eida Hacharedit). The appetizer was an interesting salmon and tomato salad). I was also given a double wrapped foil tray with 2 warm rolls (each roll had an individual plumba sticker on it which was a little frightening). The main course was kosher for passover and kitnyot free. I was hoping for some chametz since the appetizer tray was. It was beef with a veggie medley of some sort and yep, more potatoes. The dessert was chametz apple pie. 4/17/12- FRA-BOS - This meal came from Sohar in Frankfurt. The appetizer tray had another piece of lox, also a plate of some vermecelli salad and some rolls. The main course was basically a replica of the chicken dish I was served on the way to TLV except this one didn't claim to be kfp and the potatoes were cubed instead of sliced. The dessert was chocolate mousse which was actually quite good. The pre-arrival snack was a piece of salmon (note to Lufthansa - kosher meals don't need to have salmon EVERY time). Also, there was a separate plate with some cold sliced chicken stuffed with spinach (I was given 2 separate forks and knives). There was also some sliced fruit. Sorry for the lack of pictures, hopefully the description is adequate. Imo, I had better food on the return segments. The frozen Bornstein meal had a lot of food but was a bit of a disappointment in terms of quality. Either way, this food was way better than the Stogel cardboard box (yes, I realize that's not saying much). |

I am going to start a new trend if this works... I just wrote an email requesting where my preference is for meals to be loaded onto the plane. Which caterers to be used in what order. I told them politely that I can bring my own crackers and not to consider the Stogel fancy box.
Lets see if this works. Even being served a sandwich or cold cuts from the right airport is preferable than seeing certain caterers. Hope the airlines can slowly learn that caterers are not exchangeable commodities and a longer life fresh meal is preferable than fancy box with crackers. The caterers in Europe should come up with a fresh meal solution that lasts a little longer. I'd be very happy with a large sandwich made with good bread and cold cuts. It should be able to last up to 3 days sealed. Then the airlines could load them in Europe instead of having fancy boxes stocked in Asia. |
