Why should anyone have to book by phone if they don't want to. Booking online is far far more convenient for me, even if I didn't get the extra points.
Does this GM want people to stay in the dark ages just so he can make a bit more money? I would lose it if I had the kind of experience the OP had. It is completely inappropriate and unacceptable.

Calls can be virtually free these days. Nonoh.net is your friend @:-)
So you'll be checking out on the 10th?
No, 3 nights, 8th, 9th and 10th, checking out on the 11th.
And did you want smoking or non-smoking?
*sigh* non-smoking.
And do you want a King sized bed?
No, I said 2 double beds.
OK, the price will be $450 for the 3 nights.
I have $400 quoted on your website.
Oh...let me check that....(5 minutes later) yes...I can give you that. Your name?
FliesFromCanada.
FliesFromKanada?
No, Canada, with a C.
With a D?
No, C as in Charlie...
(repeat, painfully, for full address)
OK, FliesFromKanada, your credit card number?
*at which point I have to loudly read my credit card number in my open office cubicle*
Is it any wonder I'd rather pull my own teeth than book anything online? I even order my pizza online now.

If it were me I wouldn't be annoyed. I'll gladly call the hotel directly next time and ask, since I'm saving your money by not booking from the chain website, what can you offer me? A discount? Free internet? Free parking? Free breakfast? more points?
