Need to pay to confirm business seat in advance?

Can someone let me know if there is a secret handshake to avoid this?!

Do you mean a seat reservation? Does QR not allow free seat reservations with your OneWorld Ruby status? Alternatively you need to buy a Comfort or Elite fare.

Bear in mind the Lite fare does not include lounge access either.

I have JAL diamond status, so this should give me the seats, right? With regard to lounge access - so a business award DOHA-LAX does not include access? Well, I am connecting from a paid F ticket inbound from Amman. Hopefully I will have access to the F lounge.

Classic includes lounge acces, while both Lite and Classic have seat selection for a fee for non elite members.

Yes, you're right. Typo! Thanks for pointing it out.
