Upgrade to premium class offer, is Qatar out of his mind?

received a mail to upgrade to business class on QR181 DOH to VIE at the soft price of 23.667THB, around 640 euros!
Thus 23.667x4 segments would equal a supplement of 94.668B on top of economy ticket I paid, are they out of their mind, is anyone paying such a premium to enjoy J class?

Note they have a promotion running for 1 sep to 29 feb 2016 travel in J at 63.000THB.
I am flying next week, at 63K B I would have booked J class, 3 weeks ago the Qflash promo was even 56K, but my wife broke an arm and it was unclear then when I could travel. Thus I will stick to Y class for once, A380 and B787, I guess i will survive?

Well I will reach silver landing VIE and hit gold in october after next planned trip in J and maybe get the 100k bonus miles for the globetrotter promotion...

It does seem like a lot extra to upgrade, would you get the J class miles and use of the lounge etc?

It's no different from seeing something expensive in the shop that you don't feel is worthwhile.

If you don't like the value for money, just walk away (or, in this case, delete the email).

PS. 640EUR to go from Y to J hardly seems ridiculous. Presumably you can just re-ticket with the sale fare if you think it's such good value.

Whilst you do get access to the lounge, you only receive miles and Qpoints based on your original booking class. So it makes it even more questionable as an option.

I agree with Stargold, 640 is not an outrageous amount to pay.............

Can you not see how much it is to upgrade the entire BKK-VIE segments through Manage My Booking, and then judge whether it is worth the difference? At least you'd get the additional miles and Qpoints for upgrading that way.

640 EUR is dirt cheap to upgrade! Its basically free, considering the price of J class anyways!

I wouldn't quite put it at "basically free", since it is for only one sector. Multiply that by 4 and add the economy fare, and you're probably around the "standard" I class fare...

So not quite free, but definitely "fair"... QR has made it very clear that it is not trying to fill up it's C cabins to make more space in the back. In fact I'm still sort of surprised they actually offer upgrades for cash.

The question always is, is it worth it for YOU. Depending on schedule, level of anticipated tiredness etc, it might be. Considering DOH-VIE is less than 5 hours, I would't go for it. Same offer for a night flight >7 hours.. Worth a thought.

640 euro for one segment x4 isn't dirt cheap, that's 2560 on top of eco N class ticket whilst 3 weeks ago their Qflash promo had the same itinerary at 1514 euro for an I booking code and the actual promotion for sep to feb travel comes at 1700 euro, thus cattle class I will sit....

Really curious to sit in the back of the A380 and not so for the B787....

Upgrade offers don't look at the original price of your ticket. They tend to be decided more on the basis of how many seats might be available to fill (if there are few seats left in business, then they would ask for more; if there are lots of seats left in business, then it is unlikely that they will sell out based on last-minute business travel, so they can afford to offer a few seats at a lower-than-normal rate), what the "usual" cost of a business sector might be, and how long the segment is.

Of course, if you paid a really low fare, then any amount is going to be a much greater percentage than for those people travelling on your flight who might have paid many multiples of your total fare.

I'm not sure why you have decided to multiply the offer amount by 4 - true, you have 4 segments, but you are not being offered an upgrade for all 4, and even if you were, that's not how it works, each sector would be offered separately at possibly different rates. You don't have to upgrade this flight - or even all 4, even if you were to receive an offer for all 4 and were interested.

€640 to upgrade a Europe-Gulf (or vice versa) segment is pretty much standard, across most of the ME3 airlines.

They're obviously not going to pitch the price so low that every passenger in economy class would consider it a bargain. And they're not going to pitch is so high that no passenger in economy class would ever be tempted.

You already once had the option to buy a business-class seat for the flight; for your own reasons you decided against it. You are now being given a second chance for this sector only - you clearly don't find the price attractive, but that does not mean that it is an unreasonable amount, or that QR are insane to ask for such a price.

People do sometimes indeed pay these amounts for upgrades on similar flights - and when a csutomer is happy to pay this, then that's not invalidated by you, or any other passenger, not finding the offer attractive.

Dear irishguy,
I did a test booking after your reply to travel J class same dates (next week)
84.000THB or approx 2270 euro.

I have not yet received offer for both return segments, experflyer shows both flights J9, C8, D7, I7, but I doubt offer will be under 600 euro.

Thus again 4x600 = 2400 euro on top of eco fare paid, that's undeniable more expensive than buying a biz ticket return from the start.

Yes, I missed out on the 1550 euro and 1700 promotion because of family issues, not wanting to pay 2000+ I booked eco booking class N ticket, I am happy with that, just finding QR offer to be more expensive than normal ticket.

I will let you know the offer on the return segments but at 600+ I am not buying...

It might be nice for an eco passenger to try out biz on one segment to get the taste of J...

As I expected I got exactly the same offer for the second segment of my return flight.
Etihad uses Plusgrade, a service where you can bid with minimum to maximum offers, seats are assigned 24h before the flight. I booked a few upgrades around 400/450 euro, thus in my opinion 640 euro for a one sector upgrade is way overpriced.

How much would it cost to change your ticket now to the 2270 Euro fare? Did you chack whether Qatar will let you upfare without paying a change fee and whether your ticket is totally nonchangeable or has a reasonable fee? If you fly Qatat regularly, it might make sense to turn your current ticket into a credit with Qatar (possibly minus a reasonable change fee) and then purchase a new ticket at the business class fare of 2270 Euro, which would then undeniably result in not oly lounge access but other business class benefits, including possibly accelerating your status.

I purchased this N booking code ticket June 23 to fly June 30 and as price went up from 1500 to 1750 to 2270 went for eco ticket at 780 euro.
I already hold a biz booking code I ticket for a sept/oct trip, thus all is fine there.

I am halfway in the trip so it's too late to upgrade the ticket.
Load factor was low on both sectors; had 3 seats on A380, fantastic aircraft way better than the good old B747, also had 3 seats on B787, but what a lousy aircraft, people in front reclined their seats and as a result you get the screen in your face, flitter thin hard seats etc.

Load factor return segment is very low but all B787, final destination different from departure city, easy to get 3 seats on both segments, but paid the 640 euro this morning to upgrade last segment, thus will have Al Mourjan access in Doha. total cost will near the 1500 euro but only 1 segement in J

In the mean time I got silver status halfway this trip and will reach gold after next trip.

I will make sure a similar situation not to repeat itself and continue to say that 640 euro for a one segment upgrade is way to much.

Do you get access to the Al Murjan lounge if you upgrade a DXB-HIA segment from Y to F but continue your trip (HIA-CDG) in Y? (I just got this upgrade offer in the mail, that's why I'm asking)

I was of the belief that Al Mourjan access was dependent on your onward travel class from DOH, however, I can't say I've been in a position to check.
