I was in the press conference when Akbar Al Baker announced it.

Highlight of the session was, when asked how much he had in budget for sponsorship, he said that he did not want to tell the sponsors how deep his pockets were!

As deep as the Qatari Government.

Wonder why Philly as IAD and JFK are in close proximity. When are the fights suppose to star?

US/AA's oneworld hub once the merger completes and Qatar has full membership.

Why not Charlotte or DFW?

Good point. My first thought was that PHL doesn't seem to be a better O&D market than other potential choices, nor is it a hub; forgot about US.

Though I'd think that MIA, especially with all of the connections southward, or DFW would be better -- the AA feed would be nice considering they don't fly anywhere near DOH. Interesting choice. I hope that we see a west-coast city soon.

PHL is also a quick Amtrak ride from NYC and WAS. Plus as noted, will soon be a Oneworld hub.

Route is slated to start 01MAR2014 with a 77W. Addis Ababa will join the network on 18SEP13, followed by Clark on 28OCT13. Both Clark and Addis will be direct competition for EK, I'll be interested to see how QR does on all three routes, since PHL doesn't seem like a destination which can support a 77W year round, it seems like more of a 77L destination since PHL can't sustain any other Asian destination yet.

Awesome news. Going to South East Asia via JFK & Middle East has been a royal pain for people from South Jersey/DE/Philadelphia Metro/SE Pennsylvania area.

I persoanlly tend to avoid European routes with kids. Finally I don't need to go to JFK/IAD/EWR and getting there is costly and PITA.

Can't wait.

So much for "announcing" Atlanta, Boston, Detroit...

Didn't QR has previously announce to BOS, ATL, MIA or etc? So what happened to them? I wasn't sure if the route is abandon.

Take everything QR says with a grain of salt.

There are some interesting YouTube videos of the "attractions" near to Clark and they definitely suggest an emphasis on "more" and "fun"!

Mixed reactions to this. Was hoping they would service DFW. But my parents live in PHL so it will be good for them.

@CaptainEKAirbus- Well, although Israel is considered Middle East, it's still part of Asia. USAir has daily non-stop from PHL to Tel Aviv.
