I don't think AF and LH ran competitions. They either took the top x flyers or had the relevant managers nominate FFers.

I agree it is unlikely QF would do such a thing, but hope eternally powers us all.

Speaking of things not open to NZ residents, QF has finally expanded the special services team to NZ ^

Why AKL? Is it to get some ETOPS trials or to rub it in NZ face? Or to say that QF was the first to fly the A380 to AKL before EK?

Hmmm it has been indicated to me several times that QFNZ has special teams for their corporate accounts, mostly Australian owned companies with ops in NZ. I have not received any noticable difference in service from the years as a SG or even QPNB/PS. Well besides from the Jetconnect FTers and the QP staff that have begun to call me without looking at the BP.
What does "special service team" do and is it for WPs?

Take that NZ
Take that EK

But not the first A380 at AKL though. Airbus brought it here some time ago.

Apparently EK plans a second A380 route trans-tasman next year!

Special services team is new (in NZ) and apparently is for CL + high scoring WPs. I'm still trying to find out what it actually does (the promised ability to waive rules sounds interesting).

Can they waive rules such as the Australian Residency requirements for most QF and QFF promotions .

So hypothetically lets say I need a friend to accompany me to something

What would you bribe me with to get invited?
