Qantas plane suffered corrosion

THE Qantas plane forced to make an emergency landing in the Philippines after a massive hole opened up in its fuselage had been plagued by a history of corrosion.

News Limited reports today that engineers discovered a large amount of corrosion in the Qantas jumbo during a major refurbishment earlier this year.

The 17-year-old Boeing 747-400, registration VH-OJK, received a new interior at Victoria's Avalon Airport in March.

Aviation sources said aircraft engineers had noted a "lot" of corrosion during the refit, the report said.

Experts said the dramatic incident was most likely to have been caused by either corrosion to the inside of the plane, such as a liquid spilled in the cabin above that had lain undetected, or damage caused by freight or a maintenance vehicle that had been badly repaired.

David Gardner, editor of Aerospace International, said human error could have played a part.

"You sometimes get panels coming off planes and it's usually down to a mistake being made somewhere on the inspection or engineering side," he said.

"A bolt may have been put in wrong or something might not have been checked properly.

"That kind of fault is rare with big airlines such as Qantas and British Airways - it's something more often associated with African and South American airlines, where the training is not so good and the standards are lower."

David Learmont, operations and safety editor of Flight International magazine, said: "Over a period of years, a weak spot could have developed with pressurisation and that can ultimately lead to a blow-out."

PURE SPECULATION

This mishap is getting a lot of media attention .I have seen the video as reported earlier on all the reports .
I'm in Warsaw and the local channels , plus german , french and italian stations also reported it .
Needless to say it was big news on CNN- they reported that a US official discounted any terrorist causes for the hole! They also quoted Qantas CEO Mr Owen Dixon with his thoughts about the incident !!

More B.S. speculation. Why do people do that? How could you possibly know what caused it? Or didn't?

I guess enough time has passed for the Philippine security services to quickly sniff for common explosives, but still...

I guess it's better than faux news constantly flashing "possible terror attack on australian jet" or some other such crap.

The chief executive, Geoff Dixon, said:"The Australian Transportation Safety Bureau and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority have been notified of the incident and Qantas is sending its own engineers to Manila."
I wonder if the flight that the engineers they're sending from Australia are on will be impacted by the delays caused by the engineering/management disputes

Footage on the Plane.

I did find the footage from inside the plane very interesting but maybe the crew forgot to tell people to turn off electronic equipment for landing.

No one's brought it up in this thread but the incident is somewhat similar to UA 811 incident many years back where the starboard cargo door blew out, disabling the 2 starboard engines, leaving a huge hole in the side, and sucking out 9 pax to boot. I thought something similar had happened but it looks like the causes are very different.

By listening to the radio news in SYD this morning, you could reasonably assume that the investigation has already discovered that corrosion in a 17 yr old plane was the sole reason.

Looking at the picture, I would say that the fuselage structure that failed is the greenish inside thing. You can see rivets for reinforcement rings, which are meant to hold internal pressure, plus also some longitudinal reinforcements. (Remember that roughly, longitudinal stress is half the hoop stress.)

Anyway, I would say that this internal structure -the real structure- failed over a smaller area, and then pushed out the entire outer panel.

This panel is really the transition to the wing box (on the left on the picture posted), which is obviously a quite strong component, since it helps carrying the weight of the fuselage to the wings. Which may have been a somewhat mitigating factor?
