Likelihood of U opening up
Have upgrade Y-J waitlisted for Sunday flight. Currently shoing J4 (D0). Assuming it stays at that what is the likelihood that given J4 there are still J seats available for upgrades? Do they have more J availabiluty than seats?

To be honest.. it ALL comes down to luck. Sometimes they do alocate those to U and sometimes not, someone may purhcase a seat or they may not.
Keep calling up to 24 hours before to get that upgrade!

If it is waitlisted, there is no need to keep calling back; if seats become available and there are not too many people ahead of him in the upgrade waitlist, then he will get the upgrade

The other thing you can hope for is the ripple effect for First Class upgrades as well - are there many seats left in First Class? If you're lucky some more seats in Business will open up that way too.

I had considered upgrading myself to F so that J seat becomes available for my fiance's upgrade to J - but F is full (QF load factors to US are excellent - especially up front).
On a related note, how can one find out the length of the waitlist ahead of one - I asked both QFF customers service, and QF sales agent and both said they can't see that. Any way to see or find out waitlist length and one's position in that waitlist?

If you are QF Plat (OW Emerald) you can ask how many Plats/Emeralds are ahead of you (as first in, first allocated)...otherwise, it's pot luck (there may be 1, there mmight be 10).
