I'm not a regular flier. In a few months I need to go to PER to attend the wedding of my best mate.
I don't really care about all the trimmings on board the plane (food, entertainment blah blah blah). But what I do care about is the space they give you.
I'm comparing fares at the moment. Virgin is coming out cheaper than Qantas. I would like to know is there a lot of difference in terms of seat space on this route between the two carriers - in "standard" economy?
I'm 6'5" if that helps. At the moment my choice is between Qantas "standard economy" and Virgin Blue "Blue Zone", bothing working out at the same price (Virgin Blue $10 dearer), any advicewould be appreciated.

One thing to consider with Qantas is that aircraft operating MEL-PER are generally either 767's or A330's, compared to Vermin's 737's. WHy is this a difference?
The 767 is configured 2-3-2, the A330 is 2-4-2, whereas the 737 is 3-3. On a long flight, this can make a hell of a difference. I have never flown Vermin, and I probably never will (due to concerns about their safety) but I will choose a 767 or an A330 over a 737 any day for this reason alone.
The advantage of the 767/333 over the 737 is that with an aisle seat (my preference) you will only have one person climbing over you when they want to get out, on a 737 you will have two.
For someone of your height, I would recommend an aisle seat, as no matter which carrier you go with you will find the space restrictive. If you go down this road, I would then recommend QF, for the reason mentioned above.
I would also get a note made in your booking - tell them to stick in an "SSR" regarding your height, and "Q" it across to seating control - so that they could possibly hold an exit row seat for you to be allocated at check-in. They will quite often do this for an extremely tall person, but it won't be finalised until check-in - they want to make sure you are as tall as you say you are as well as making sure you are able bodied and able to assist in an evacuation.

Even though it would be against religion here, I would suggest taking Virgin Blue, Blue Zone if available. I think the pitch on Virgin is about 30-31 where Qantas would be 31" but Blue zone would offer more room.

Go with Qantas - depending on the time of the flight, you will get a really nice meal, dedicated flight attendants and good inflight entertainment.
ON my last SYD>PER flight I was pre-allocated a bulkhead row right in the middle row of three up the front of a 767-300: an excellent seat as I could stretch out and even poke my toes into business class.
I concur that DJ IS a painful airline to fly, and found my last flight BNE>CNS to be the worst experience yet.
