Don't the more detailed passport checks usually occur at check-in, not when boarding the plane.

There is direct access between the airline CRS's and the Immigration computers so they can verify when checking in.

Passport checks at the gate are generally ID checks to ensure the person on the BP is the person boarding the aircraft.
