upgrading using points and credits

I'm wondering whether it is possible to upgrade QF flights using a combination of points and upgrade credits? The reason is, I have two upgrade credits, but for a flight to e.g. Bali I need three. Could I just use the two credits and pay another 5000 points and get the OW upgrade?

'Fraid not: it's points-only or credits-only, no combinations allowed (at least according to all the published information).

The only way to use a combination is for a multi-sector flight. For example, if you only had 3 credits and wanted to upgrade SYD-LHR (normally 5 credits) would could use credits for SYD-SIN and then points for SIN-LHR.

However, to do this your reservation would need to show the two sectors individually, and not just a single flight SYD-LHR. The easist way to do that is to use two different flight numbers for the two sectors (plenty of connection options).

For Bali you may need to travel via Perth, and use credits for SYD-PER and points for PER-Bali or similar.

Another question on upgrades-

I know that you need to have a purchased ticket before you upgrade on QF, but will QF reservation reps look for upgradable itineraries, sell the ticket, and then upgrade you immediately afterward?

Yes - a friend of mine did exactly that on a recent flight from SYD to AKL.

Although one thing to remember is that by purchasing through QF you quite often miss out on the cheapest airfares.

One other way to do it is to book through a travel agent, get them to place a remark in the booking that QF have permission to change the booking, and then phone QF to do the upgrades. With the comment in the booking they can then look around at a few dates either side of your ticketted date.

Yes you can have a look at Z or U class at www.qantas.com (award flights) and then ring them up and ask to book on that flight. I dont know if the reps will do this however.

You can also buy a full Y ticket on your preferred flight, and if no upgrade is available, switch the flight and keep doing so until you get upgrade availability.

I've only once been unable to secure an upgrade this way, Darwin to Sydney on the red-eye, but got upgraded at check-in anyway. Works for me - didn't cost me any credits.

Don't even need to make it full Y, just make sure it is changeable and in one of the classes that is readily available.

And if booked through a travel agent, get the comment put in. QF won't be able to touch the booking prior to departure without that permission from the agent.
