Ansett New Zealand becomes Qantas New Zealand

As the article below details, Ansett New Zealand is to be rebranded as Qantas New Zealand. I believe that Ansett New Zealand was under obligation to change its name anyway after the takeover of Ansett Australia by Air New Zealand.

You have been able to earn Qantas FF points on Ansett New Zealand for 3 years or so now, but this new deal will also allow integration with other Oneworld partners.

This can also be viewed as part of a greater move into New Zealand - new flights announced to start from November this year will give Qantas more trans-tasman seats than Air New Zealand for the first time.

New name, new look for Ansett NZ

Ansett New Zealand, which was sold to a local consortium earlier this year, has got a new name with a familiar look.

The airline will be known as Qantas New Zealand, and planes and staff will be kitted out in Qantas colours.

The new owners are confident New Zealanders will accept the Aussie icon, which is now in direct competition with Air New Zealand on domestic routes.

Ansett New Zealand Limited will be operated as Tasman Pacific Airlines and become a franchise of Qantas Airways. A group of mainly New Zealand investors will own the ailrine, but it will operate as part of the Qantas family.

Within the next two weeks, the first plane will be wheeled out of the hangar to compete head to head with Air New Zealand.

Just last week Air New Zealand sealed its purchase of Ansett Australia, giving it a foothold in the Australian domestic market.

Now Qantas has a stake in New Zealand, and believes its name will revive the troubled former Ansett New Zealand.

But there have been no immediate hints of price cuts to lure new customers.

The effect of the paper work will become visible in the next two months, when over one weekend terminals around the country will take on the familiar red and white look of Qantas.

Neither Qantas nor Tasman Pacific Airlines would comment on the financial arrangement between the two companies.
