Award Date Changes BEWARE!

I just spoke to the CSO QF and she told me that for NON QF flights, once you have travelled on the outbound sector you CANNOT change the return date (Even if you are Silver, Gold or PLT) Only QF flights are OK.

Luckily I checked! I might have to book QF2 on the way back (as I don't know when I will come home using the return segment.

This is why I always recommend you have suitable travel insurance for such awards. If you miss a flight (for any reason) the rest of the itinerary is cancelled and you are on your own to get home.

Who sells insurance to cover this type of situation?

Skipping award ticket segment

I just ran into this problem today. I am on a QF BC award ticket SIN-MEL-SYD-SIN. I called Cathay Pacific who issued the award to check whether I could skip or cancel the MEL-SYD segment without having the SYD-SIN segment canceled. They said no but check with QF. I checked and QF said it couldn't be done - it's considered a change in routing.

It's crazy - QF could have saved me flying a BC segment at whatever cost it is or better yet made it available for QF frequent flyer awards or upgrades.

I must say that my QF award ticket has caused me a lot more trouble than I ever expected. I usually fly on Northwest awards and they are much more flexible.

QF makes a profit, NW doesn't. Say no more.

(Although from my recent Untied States flights, NW is probably one of the better of the third world carriers).

I have not checked recently, but the travel insurance that QF used to sell covered the return of FF points if the trip was cencelled etc. So that is a good starting point. Otherwise you need to ask around. Most don't want to know about FF award tickets. Make sure you are covered for missed flights for any reason, or be prepared to find your own way home.
