Getting to ATH on FF points

The sequel to my initial post on this as above is that I can now get the family to Europe with confirmed WHY seats in mid-June, and will combine that with a cheap fare from ebookers to get to ATH and back, however am having real trouble betting them FF seats back to Oz from Europe in mid-July.
Have already had a couple of WP requests knocked back, and now waiting on the third. FF agents have looked at several routings, and other OW carriers, but nothing available as yet.
Any advice to offer re any other options? I was thinking about it today and wondered if it is possible to request a return via the US, turning it into an around the world itinerary? I guess using BA or AA, then QF. Have not asked about this and don't know if it is allowable.
Any advice on this, or any other bright @:-) 's appreciated.
