Finally decided to join!

Hi,

I've been lurking about the forum for ages, reading sagely advice about QFF, even used the AVIS AWDs listed here. Like a good AussieBattler, I finally thought I better say G'day!

I am a Qantas SG that has consistently not put my annual (work paid for) DONE4 to good enough use. Prior to 2003, I could say I wasted it by just doing the work trip (SYD-LAX-ORD-(SOMETIMES LGA/JFK)-LHR-SYD). Stupid!!!!!! So I was always a lowly blue/silver, thinking (though knowing that this was not true) my QP membership was okay.

Last year I was better organised, charmed the boss' secretary, and did SYD-LAX-ORD-DCA-ORD-MIA-JFK-LHR-ATH-BCN-ORY/CDG-LHR-SYD (I met up with Mrs Aussie Battler in LHR to have a much needed Euro holiday) and finally made SG. This year, Mrs AussieBattler will let me take a bit of extra time to get home. My challenge then is to get to WP this trip (DONE4). I'll ask the same question in the Oneworld forum, but I hope you blokes can have a look at the answers provided.

My challenge is to get from SYD to ORD (spend the working week there for work Aug 2- 6), then to LHR (a weekday) possibly go to ATH (family- a couple of days), and some shopping for the impending little AussieBattler in HKG, I have to be back in SYD by Aug 15 or Mrs AussieBattler will not be happy.

Thanks in advance,

Welcome, but Ray Martin might sue you for trying to pretend to be an Aussie Battler who gets a DONE4 each year!!!!

Middle class Aussie battlers unite!

No, we are all poor Aussie battlers who get shafted by large corporates every day and particularly wrt QFF. Ray should do stories on us. I can see it now: (Subtext in brackets)

"Simple Australian folk trying to save enough QFF points to take the family to Hawaii get another kick in the pants. People working hard to pay all their bills by credit cards now have the value of their purchases summarily halved (yes, before you all start complaining, we all know the correct reasons for this- but Aussie battlers don't do they?);
they may see a $49 fare but the airline either won't serve them a decent meal (yes, what do you expect for $49);
hardworking Aussies traving accross the world, selling for this great country, get told told that your business is only worth half as much (our recent changes wrt upgrade points/credits)"

OK so I have worked hard, studied, always paid my bills, worked 60 hrs a week, get sent to the States/Europe for work (strictly work, mind you, its only recently that I have dared ask for a less than direct routing and besides a DONE4 is the cheap option for them), when I catch the shuttle down to Melbourne (don't ask questions when the boss books me on the el-cheapo fare), so why can't Ray or even Naomi humour me for once!

Middle class Aussie battlers unite!
See you in the QP one day

I can make but one contribution -
Remember that a certain sporting event commences on 13 AUG!

Welcome AussieBattler. The best advice I can give for maximising the DONE4 is as follows:

Look for AA 2-class flights over 2700 miles. This gets you seated in F (really more like J anyway), but also scores you 150 SC's each way as it is an F flight. Some examples are ORD-ANC, DFW-ANC (these are seasonal in summer only), and SFO-BOS. Since ORD is in your plane, why not take an overnight scoot up to ANC and score 300 SC's along the way.

Also, make sure you break the journey in SIN on the way back. Don't just take the one flight number all the way through. You get 220 SC's for LHR-SYD and 160+100SC for LHR-SIN-SYD. But it must be two coupons in your ticket book.

In Europe, LHR-HEL is over 1000 miles, so a good side trip also.

If you want to take the long way home, LHR-HKG-NRT-MEL-PER-SYD is always a good run at 160+60+160+60+60=500 SC's.

There are a few very good threads over in the OneWorld board explaining how to maximise these routings.
