Thanks. That does not look too full to me, so not sure why they are so expensive...

At 229 days out only those who *must* fly on that day will be booking now. The lower cost fare buckets are zeroed out to maximize the $$ QF will get
MEL to DPO Devonport TAS is not a popular destination. (Can take a ferry with your car, subsidized by federal govt as a "highway")

Short flights have a high cost per km
  • Step 1: Advertising, selling tickets, check in, loading pax & bags, airport charges, fuel up, aircraft takeoff and climb to cruise altitude (high power). [very high cost]
  • Step 2: Cruise at medium ~ low power, autopilot on, FA's down the back playing on phones ~ reading magazines. [a little harsh] [low cost]
  • Step 3: Landing: airport charges, unloading pax & bags, park aircraft [high cost]
A lot of aircraft maintenance is per cycle (take off - landing). [high cost]. A lesser amount is per flying hour. [medium cost]

I will need to fly - returning on EK406 at 05:30 after 8 weeks in Europe. When I was booking EK flights, these were at $359. Then they dropped to $329 and now they are crawling up again. Interestingly 2-7 June sells for $159, then it goes up until 21 June which again sells for $159. Later on flights to DPO sell for about $195. I am not aware of anything major happening in Tassie and importantly not in Devonport. Not even school holidays...

MEL-LST on 19 June was $109 not so long ago, now $178. MEL-HBA is $187. So that would not suggest any major happenings in Tassie either. So, it's rather puzzling why those two weeks are up.

And no, there was no way to book those together with EK tickets - it was done on-line using "Dubai Experience" to get 10% off J class fares (well worth of it). Unfortunately, was told it does not allow for any codeshare or mixed class, and DPO is whY only 😭

So you saved some mega $$$ on a sale fare and are quibbling over an extra $100 on a domestic leg of what 65 mins?
And you could fly Rex for $194....
Or JQ to LST for $30

Thanks for your "valuable" input Koru Flyer

No, I am not quibbling over an extra $100 (BTW, it's two of us going), I am just curious. And your suggestions are not very helpful - the Rex fare is without any checked luggage and God only knows whether Rex will still be flying by that time. JQ is the same, no luggage and would have to somehow travel from LST to Devonport which negates any savings.

BTW, just on phone with QF - departure on 6 May is changing - seems they are adding more flights (maybe they know more about Rex's future than anyone else). Now, the 19 June seems to be changing too... QF search is all over, returning different flights every 10 minutes or so, so probably they are filling new stuff as I am typing...

Okay so it is $50pp for a bag

(incidentally you can do the maths either way you saved 2X on the flights so consider 2X on the QF cost, or you take it per person, either way the saving is exactly the same).

Lots of people either take a car service or rent a car from LST to Devonport to save money, which would only be a 1X cost as presumably you would share a car?

Thanks for sharing your personal speculations on Rex. Given they are buoyant by $200M in government funding, you could also make the reverse argument

end of the day you have options and personal preferences, and a general forum is simply here to highlight all options so you can make an informed choice.
