Just saw it taxi past me at AKL, and briefly wondered whether QF had upgauged its AKL-SYD service! Not a fun flight for anyone... especially since they're showing 6 hours on the ground in AKL for total delay into SYD of 10+ hours.

Crew out of hours at AKL so others have to be brought over?

A passenger had a health problem which required medical evacation, so the plane diverted to NAN. They realised the crew would run out of hours so doing change over in AKL.... joyous flight. I feel for the person with the health issue and their family. Hope the person is ok.

Why not NAN-BNE instead of the NZ diversion?

3hr flight vs 4hrs. Crew must have been out of time.

It looks like they were only on the ground at Nadi for about a half hour. It seems surprising to me that the crew was so close to the limit as scheduled.

They landed at 7am Sydney time in AKL and should have landed at 6am in Sydney if on schedule. That means if they had enough fuel to divert to BNE that would have been 8am Sydney time landing. Surely crew out of time? Safety first.

interestingly my friend who is on the flight, tells me that they left NAN bound for BNE and all of sudden the destination was changed to AKL.

May have been a fuel/fuel reserve issue

Edit
https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/travel-troubles/119044720/qantas-a380-makes-unscheduled-visit-to-auckland-airport-after-medical-emergency
A Qantas A380 made an unscheduled visit to New Zealand on Saturday after a passenger on board suffered a medical emergency.

A Qantas spokesperson said flight QF8 from Dallas-Fort Worth to Sydney was originally diverted to Nadi, Fiji, following a medical emergency on board.

Due to crew duty limits, after the unscheduled stop in Nadi the aircraft was not able to reach Australia so the pilots flew to Auckland International Airport where Qantas had more options to accommodate customers on another flight, the spokesperson said.

I had a friend on it too and was a bit worried as Qantas provides almost no information.

I'm not sure the passengers even knew they were going to fly it to Sydney after Auckland because they had them all at ticket counter to get on new flights, I guess if there was openings, they must have rebooked folks sooner than continuing on QF8.
