I did once book within 48 hours of departure and 4A was available.

Yup, lower is no QFF status and no Oneworld Ruby or higher status.
IME, about 50% of the time the middle seat in row 4 SYD-MEL has a bronze pax sitting in it....I've taken to picking row 5 or 6 as more chance to keep the middle seat blocked ... maybe airport checkin allocates row 4 preferentially for non-status pax.

Does notional seating also apply to international flights?
Anecdotally, it might since at T-80 I got access to better seats than my father in law - which is a little problematic as he is on a separate PNR to our family.
