oldest seems to be 25 years old. Youngest seems to be 15 years old.
Most airlines have got rid of most of their 744s.
Guess Qantas owns some or all of their 744s so guess cheap to keep going except use bit more fuel.

two additional points
I can add two additional observations:
- Qantas has a longstanding codeshare with WS - which serves most CA cities;
- I don't think Qantas can compete with the excellent fares Air New Zealand offers via its 3 North American gateways (LAX. SFO, YVR).

Somewhat of a generalisation. Things break in newish aircraft too. QF have experience of that (380, 744, 330 and a recent 738 flight of mine that stayed out of the news - somehow). And IIRC the 787s, their batteries and RR engines also come to mind. I find it hard to substantiate the generalisation about old aircraft based on this. Oh, and then there was the crack in the cabin of the newish 2nd hand 744 that QF got from (IIRC OZ or MH). But, if you have insider information please elaborate.
