QF16 Departure Times

Anyone know what's the story with the QF16 (LAX-BNE) delays recently. Scheduled departure is 11:20pm but in December it was delayed almost every day by more than an hour.

I am flying in Feb and it already leaves late enough.

If the aircraft operating LAX-BNE is the same aircraft that does LAX-JFK-LAX, then any delay getting out of JFK will impact QF 16. I believe the turnaround in JFK is quite tight. Also, LAX-BNE is the last QF flight out to Oz each night, so this may be held for late connections.

QF18 and QF96 are both later.

According to EF, for tonight’s departures from LAX (2 Jan), QF18 is not operating and the SYD and MEL flights leave BEFORE the BNE flight.

According to Qantas' timetable, QF16 departs at 23:20, QF96 departs at 23:35, and QF18 also at 23:35. Neither QF96 nor QF18 operate every day. Point is that QF16 wasn't the last flight for quite a bit of December, so holding it for that reason shouldn't explain consistent tardiness. Your point about delay out of JFK is the best explanation.

The aircraft used for QF15/16 is used for the LAX-JFK-LAX sectors of QF11/12.
The BNE-LAX flight is the only flight to LAX that uses 747s normally. (QF11/12 does on Tuesday (A380 rest of week), QF17/18 is a 2nd SYD-LAX ad hoc seasonal flight. While the MEL flights use A380 (QF93/94) and 787 (QF95/96).
If the arrival of QF15 is late, leading to a late departure to JFK, or the flight is delayed at some point to/from New York, then the QF16 departure can be late. This is common at this time of year with weather often causing delays across the US North East.

The normal LAX departure times at this time of year are:
QF12 2230
QF16 2320
QF94 2205
QF96 2335

In the event of a JFK delay, QF16 will be delayed. It's the same aircraft, so little choice. QF12 to SYD will usually be delayed. The MEL flights only get delayed if the MEL connecting pax can't be accommodated by remaining seats to BNE and SYD.

As above, delays into and out of JFK are common during this cold time of the year on the East Coast.
The JFK-LAX flight used to be QF108 and was colloquially known as 1-0-late

Arrival time is a more realistic indicator of delays. Its common knowledge that aircraft will delay departure to minimise holding at the destination. Eye-balling the OP’s statistics, there seems to be 20-30 min padding built into the Trans Pac schedule so the delayed departures are partially recovered by arrival.

As indicated it's because QF12 JFK-LAX is almost invariably delayed.

It often carries PAX connecting to QF93 MEL, QF12 SYD (different aircraft) , QF16 (Same aircraft) and any others.

When it's late enough, it seems they often hold QF12 but let QF93 go, moving the MEL PAX travelling from JFK to QF12/QF16.

They also move some PAX from QF12/QF16 to QF93 (e.g. Those booked LAX-xSYD-MEL or LAX-xBNE-MEL).
