Best alternative to QF12 for JFK-SYD?

I'm need to book JFK-SYD. QF12 isn't flying that day from JFK to LAX. I called Qantas and they confirmed (even though it is listed for that day on their online timetable, sigh).

Am I better off on a different flight from JFK to LAX and then connecting with QF12 for LAX-SYD or should I go through DFW?

There are more than a few options on AA to LAX. Without knowing status or class of travel it's difficult to provide a useful answer other than generalization.

Then I'd suggest getting to DFW and flying from there ... lessens the time you have to travel in AA economy.

DFW has some advantages such as leaving from LGA instead of JFK (though that may be a disadvantage this year given the state of LGA). Generally costs more for that routing as well, so if you can get same price then well worth it. DFW-SYD is a more comfortable flight.

This option. You have to fly AA economy, doing what you can to shorten the experience is the way to go.
