Frequent flyer charges

Hi everyone,

I have made a one-way frequent flyer booking through the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme.

It is for a one way flight from Dubai to Nice on Emirates in First Class.

The charges for this direct 6 hour 50 minute direct flight come to $530!

The Qantas ff scheme charges have always been high, but this just seems enormous for such a short flight.

Beware if you are booking award flights ex-Dubai.

According to The Matrix EK's charges YQ of USD152 if Economy, but USD370 if in Business or First

So Qantas is kindly collecting that for Emirates

Thank you for letting me know Qantas are collecting it on behalf of another airline.

For some reason it made me feel less scammed.

You are not being less scammed - that Qantas is collecting it doesn not necessarily imply that it is passing it on to Emirates

Regardless , carrier surcharges are a scam - there is no good justification for their existence

of course it's a scam, but the finance section of QF and the QF Board may think otherwise ..

Except that QF announced a long time back now that it was going to remove surcharges

They did, at least for some revenue TransPacific fares.

This make there there even less basis for their continued application to other routes/bookings such as awards other than their bottom line.

I recall it stating that it was going to be removed for all fares

Given that the announcement was made in January, 2015 Qantas should seek to give a more precise definition to "gradually".

Cliff erosion is gradually happening - maybe that is the rate that it was envisaging

After one year, there is no excuse for the charges not to yet be merged. any arguments to do with having to file fares is lost at 1 year I would suggest

Even more so with situations where A-B may have a surcharge, but B-A doesnt

e.g. LHR-SYD r/t in business class has the staggering £718.00 in surcharges, whilst there is none for SYD-LHR r/t

I thought QF has already removed surcharges from QF coded flights it sells commercially. But it hasn't for award flights.

It did reduce surcharges on award tickets issued in Australia, but you also have the situation where carrier surcharges for award tickets issued outside Australia can be more than double for those issued in Australia (eg carrier surcharges SIN-MEL-SIN are more than double those for MEL-SIN-MEL).
