YQ on partner award tickets

So helped a friend find award seats on MH (DEL-KUL-SYD). BA EC says 30 something Euros in taxes (no YQ), matrix says about 100USD in taxes (no YQ whatsoever).

QFF is quoting him 325AUD in taxes/fuel surcharges plus the booking assistance fee and that's making spew. He made several calls (some ending up in a long wait) to verify this wasn't a one off from a rookie agent.

Conversely a MEL-KUL booking and another FRA-KUL-MEL came back as per what BA EC shows (i.e. with lots of YQ).

What's going on?!

I know the YQ is collected by the ticketing carrier. But this one is unheard of, QF as a ticketing carrier imposing their own YQ surcharges when in fact none exists!

Anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks

This is (unfortunately) common practice not just with QF but other carriers as well. Charging YQ as if the flight was operated by QF.

Wow I didn't know this although it does not seem to come as any surprise...

YQ on partner award tickets

There is YQ on this route, INR14,526 to be exact. It doesn't show in Matrix because some airlines include the YQ in the base fare on revenue fares out of certain countries but of course YQ always gets charged on award fares. Do a dummy booking on MH Enrich and you will see the YQ and other taxes itemised.

Not always. It depends on the airline whose miles you are redeeming, and which airlines you're flying

For example - AA does not charge YQ on any award flights except for those on BA and IB
(However - YQ is always charged on redemptions with QF)

Correction: QF does NOT always charge YQ. I remember that we used QFF points to fly DXB-PER on EK in September - no YQ and only AED140 each in taxes (~AUD43). Mind you, EK does not charge YQ on that sector.

And QF does not charge YQ fuel surcharges on award flight within the USA, meaning that QFF can (sometimes) be reasonable value for AA domestic flight redemptions.

Another data point, KUL-ADL in business: taxes came to 220AUD.

And DUB-JFK in Y on EI, no additional surcharges were imposed and the taxes matched those seen on the matrix 87AUD.

It's not so much that they don't charge it - it's that there is no YQ on US domestic flights. If there was YQ, I'm sure they would be charging it...
