Qantas-Emirates alliance

I have FF points with both airlines.
I am wondering why I cannot combine the points to use on either airline???
Any comments?

Doesn't work in other alliances either? (E.g. LH-UA)

The QF FF program is like a galactic Black Hole. Once it has points in it, they can only be got out by QF on their terms - ie for upgrades, tickets, car rentals, hotels, toasters and steak knives. They don't bulk them out to other programs.

Any other pair of airlines that allow you to combine their FF miles/points?

Only those that use the same program such as Miles & More.

I just spent all my Skywards miles on award flights on Qantas.

You only need 6.000 Skywards miles for a BNE-SYD or SYD-MEL flight where QF wants to have 8.000 miles.

Regards.

But you also earn QFF miles faster, so it might have been cheaper to use QFF for those redemptions (you really need earn/burn spreadsheets to do effective optimizations like this, the conversion rate is too complex and varies by individual).

I wouldn't agree there, that is a rash statement to make; some may earn miles faster, but that is definitely not always the case

I can earn far more EK miles on a trip than I would earn on the equivalent Qantas trip

number_6's statement about the complexity of the conversion rates seemed very balanced to me. My initial thoughts were also that QF FF points could be accumulated by me faster than I could accumulate EK points. But that's just my circumstances.

#6's statement was categoric that earning is faster on Qantas - this is not an accurate statement

Consider , for example a standard passenger

1st class FCO-AKL r/t via DXB and SYD

Crediting to Emirates will earn 52,500 miles plus any "mileage accelerator" bonuses that apply

Taking next month as a randon example for miles accelerators, there is another 5,000 to be earned on FCO-DXB plus 3,000 on DXB-FCO if taking EK95

Potentially can get another 8,000 on SYD-DXB if stopping in Sydney and taking the daytime service to Dubai

The base earnings are 57,500 to 68,500 with the current bonuses

Crediting to Qantas will earn 46,108 miles

With status , there will be an extra

5k, 10.5k, 15.75k extra crediting to Emirates for Silver/Gold/Platinum
11,526 , 17,592 , 23054 extra crediting to Qantas for Silver/Gold/Platinum

If holding Platinum status with Qantas will earn 69.162 points vs 73,250 ( or higher) as a Platinum member crediting to Emirates .
If holding Gold status with Qantas will earn 63,700 points vs 68,000 ( or higher) as a Gold member crediting to Emirates .
If holding Silver status with Qantas will earn 57,634 points vs 62,500 ( or higher) as a Silver member crediting to Emirates .

Without any miles accelators, the earnings would be v similar and so , I would say, that a 6k EK vs 8k QF redemption is much better value

First class is hardly a "standard passenger"

Airlines that use the Miles & More ffp are all Lufthansa group companies

I meant standard to be someone who holds no status with either carrier
