I realise this is not QF news, but it definitely affects many of us who fly these routes. NZ and CX working together is fairly akin to QF and EK working together.

Are airline alliances coming to an end?

There is now a link to a press release on the CX site too:

This is hardly new or novel, QF codeshare(d) on OZ, SA (star) and MU/AF (skyteam), so would hardly say it is alliances coming to an end. The question is when did the term "codeshare" become replaced by "strategic agreement"?

It is different from the QF/EK agreement, which seems to offer reciprocity of benefits of the two programs irrespective of codeshares, whilst the press release of CX indicates that:
Top-tier members from Air New Zealand’s Airpoints™ and Cathay Pacific’s The Marco Polo Club will enjoy reciprocal benefits when travelling on code-share flights
AFAIK, QF/EK elites will be able to access benefits even on non-codeshared flights, and the arrangements extends to earning/burning across both networks. By comparison, this NZ/CX arrangements seems to be just another set of codeshares.

[mod hat] Traveloguy is right, this really is not QF news. So please if you want to discuss, try to focus on the QF(F) implications of this announcement. [/mod hat]

Isn't 2 airlines working together an alliance?

As far as large alliances go, I can but hope that they end

Dear Red Roo,

Please hurry up and tell QF management to start codesharing on KA/CX flights beyond HKG! If NZ and CX can reach an agreement, surely QF can?!?

It is very limited regarding benefits as it appears to be limited to HKG and AKL, not onwards. Also NZ accural is very poor on partner flights, much worse than QFF IMO.
AKL - HKG is one of the second last long haul sector in which NZ has competition.
I fail to see why people get excited over codeshares. If you fly on CX to regional desitinations from HKG there is very little benefit if there is a QF code, besides, squiggles, loyalty bonus and status binus. You cannot upgrade, luggage benefits or much else.
IMO the fact that QF and CX are part of oneworld is sufficent.

Per Alan Joyce at National Press Club 9 Oct, QF is seeing MU (China Eastern) as its Chinese partner. They are also the partner in the proposed Jetstar Hong Kong.

Dubai will complement Los Angeles and Dallas, the gateways to North America; Santiago for South America; Johannesburg for Southern Africa; and Singapore and Hong Kong for Asia.
Emirates will complement our relationships with American Airlines, LAN, South African Airways and China Eastern, along with oneworld™.

Very interesting indeed. QF's partnership (alliance?) with EK gives them better access to Europe. While EK have a reasonable presence in Asia, the QF/EF relationship brings little to QF's Aussie-base for options to/from Asia.

NZ's relationship with CX is no doubt targeted at better access to Asia (especially China), but could also help somewhat with opening up European destinations of the partnership allows.

So just looking at routes, NZ may gain more from this deal than QF from their EK deal. But of course its not just about routes and we have absolutely no information about just what routes will be code-shared as part of the QF/EK or the NZ/CX relationships.

It seems to me that airlines are aiming for better local brand management and "loyalty" (there's that word again) through code-shares than through the traditional global alliances with their loyal customer base flying on other airline's codes. There must be enhanced financial benefits from code-shares over just having FF reciprocal benefits.

QF/EK have applied for fare co-ordination as part of their alliance No more cheap EK fares under-cutting the QF price on the routes they compete on. Already EK is doing much of this; for example HKG-DXB-LHR is similar distance to SYD-DXB-LHR and EK prices J ex-HKG at 50% of the ex-SYD price. This is before the QF/EK fare co-ordination ... I'm sure it will be an 80% differential then Code shares have fantastic benefits -- just not for the pax flying!

IIRC, it will not cover ALL routes they currently compete - just most of them - being services between Australia & Europe and Trans Tasman. I thought SIN-MEL/BNE and BKK-SYD are not included in the arrangement. Or does include these as well?

Courtesy of http://www.webflyer.com/travel/mileage_calculator/

Travel Route:
Sydney Kingsford Smith Arpt, Sydney, AU (SYD) to
Dubai Intl Arpt, Dubai, AE (DXB) to
London Airport, London, GB (LON)
One Way Distances:
Distance 10880 miles

Travel Route:
Hong Kong Intl, Hong Kong, HK (HKG) to
Dubai Intl Arpt, Dubai, AE (DXB) to
London Airport, London, GB (LON)
One Way Distances:
Distance 7090 miles

IMHO distance is not-that-similar. Plus remember that fares ex AU are traditionally insanely expensive, while fares from HKG were/are very competitive.
