For what it's worth, I've looked at travel insurance to cover this type of issue. My credit card insurance doesn't cover it but I found a policy that does. I bought it online from a company called Travel Insurance Direct. There may well be others out there too that cover missed connections.

I was particularly worried about weather delays (am flying out of ASE in January!) which are covered, not sure about other missed connections due to other causes.

I sees.... Well, from March next year, I wont be using Qantas between Asia and Australia with no daytime services

Taking the 2330 would definitely provide a much better margin in case of problems

Even if on a single through ticket, something could go wrong; need to look at how important it is; if it is something that it is critical to be there for, then I would suggest travelling a day earlier anyway

Thanks all - yes it is disappointing to have no daytime service.
We would travel a day earlier except that it was hard enough to get the FF seats when we did ...
Will check out best options for travel insurance too

Personally, whenever on separate bookings I always leave a decent margin in case problems occur

I myself wouldn't be too concerned. Remember that QF hubs through SIN, and there will be quite a few connecting pax coming off the QF10, so unless QF10 is grossly late the connections will generally be held.

Thanks for all your help on this one - today we were about to book our flight Sin-Per and decided to call the FF consultant first to check about the baggage LHR-Sin-Per - the fact that we would be flying J from LHR-Sin and then have to purchase economy Sin-Per on another reference. We had enough FF but didn't want to use 100,000 to fly back in J ...
However the consultant said we could add the Sin-Per leg to our original booking reference and we would be charged the lesser FF as per booking LHR-Sin-Per in one transaction - used 63,000 points instead and ended up on the one booking reference so can go with the earlier flight and baggage all the way home. Also eliminates the problem of flying J all the way except Sin-Per which could end up a problem with baggage weights and paying excess.
