For what it's worth, I've looked at travel insurance to cover this type of issue. My credit card insurance doesn't cover it but I found a policy that does. I bought it online from a company called Travel Insurance Direct. There may well be others out there too that cover missed connections.
I was particularly worried about weather delays (am flying out of ASE in January!) which are covered, not sure about other missed connections due to other causes.

So (providing tickets are available at the right price), booking on QF72 at 2330 that night would provide more margin for error. The time zone changes involved mean that the different arrival times are much of a muchness really - neither will feel like the middle of the night for the OP.
Taking the 2330 would definitely provide a much better margin in case of problems

If you are on 2 different bookings and misconnect , then you are down to whether Qantas chooses to assist. Being 2 bookings, the airline is under no obligation to assist and just hold you to fare rules of purchased ticket
They alternatively may just rebook you for no charge
Personally, whenever on separate bookings I always leave a decent margin in case problems occur

Thanks for all your help on this one - today we were about to book our flight Sin-Per and decided to call the FF consultant first to check about the baggage LHR-Sin-Per - the fact that we would be flying J from LHR-Sin and then have to purchase economy Sin-Per on another reference. We had enough FF but didn't want to use 100,000 to fly back in J ...
However the consultant said we could add the Sin-Per leg to our original booking reference and we would be charged the lesser FF as per booking LHR-Sin-Per in one transaction - used 63,000 points instead and ended up on the one booking reference so can go with the earlier flight and baggage all the way home. Also eliminates the problem of flying J all the way except Sin-Per which could end up a problem with baggage weights and paying excess.
