UA - YVR/YYC-SCL - 1061 CAD / $785 USD r/t - Premium Economy / Economy

United Airlines - Vancouver or Calgary, Canada (YVR) to Santiago, Chile (YYC) - 1061 CAD / $785 USD roundtrip in premium economy and economy (approx 65% of the mileage flown is in premium economy), or Calgary, Canada (YYC) to SCL - 1109 CAD / $820 USD roundtrip.

There are a few dates in March that work. Saturday night stay required and your return must be at least 24 hours after arrival. Ticket must be issued by March 14, 2024.

Crediting to Air Canada (interestingly, you'll actually earn more for the economy segments than the premium economy segments)
15407 SQM and Miles (Cost per SQM - 6.8865 cents CAD / 5.0951 cents USD)

Crediting to Aegean
14184 Elite Qualifying and Redeemable Miles (Cost per EQM - 5.5344 cents USD / .051 EUR)

Crediting to Asiana

Crediting to SAS
14184 Basic Miles

Crediting to Singapore Airlines
14184 Miles (Cost per Mile - 5.5344 cents USD / .074 SGD)

This is somewhat surprising to me as I had to book YUL-SCL in January for an upcoming trip in March and PY was violently expensive. The quasi reasonable ones ($2,500+CAD) had 7 and 12 hour layovers each way.

In addition, SCL capacity is being seriously downgraded with AC stopping the route after March, AA has cancelled one (can't remember if its DFW or MIA) and I think UA also cancelled on eof their routes.

Hmmmmm

It's still crazy expensive from "Eastern Canada" and nearly the same price as when you booked. The distance is further so I'd expect the ticket to cost more than from YVR/YYC, but the cost per mile is much higher too, which is a more accurate comparison.

It does seem that airlines are having trouble filling seats to SCL though. As you said, flights have been dropped. For about 675-700 CAD you can find one-way tickets from YVR/YYC to SCL on Delta/LATAM in PE, so they are discounting too. If you flip these routes around and originate in SCL, you can find roundtrips in PE for less than $900 on American.

Darn...couldn't make it work. Headed to SCL on UA in Y+ on March 14th. This would have been a great buy for PE!

One could argue that SCL is becoming a victim of the Post Covid travel scene. Being a strong route for some Business Travel (Mining and Agriculture) but not the paid-J world of banking and consulting where they have money to burn and the tourism boom in North America does not seem to be heading towards South America. So PY is filling up early for business (AC had no A or N space most days 3 months out) and not enough J to support the route. With TATL Y now generating a lot more revenue than pre-COVID and airline fleets are limited in long haul planes they are moving fins towards more lucrative markets.

That's my take.

Once deliveries catch up, these routes should come back.

Fingers crossed, the Atacama desert is one of the coolest places on earth. And one not too many Insta-Facers have seem to have found. Shhhhhhhh

What I don't understand is that, when comparing with fares to neighboring countries like Argentina and Brazil, fares to Santiago have been a lot cheaper for several years. As recently as last year, the basic economy YVR-SCL RT could be booked for c$600s. Now I hear airlines are cutting their capacity, it makes sense the fares have gone up.

Why have fares to EZE traditionally been a lot higher than to SCL?

Precovid, the Y fares to GRU and other BR cities occasionally popped up $500-600s, but after around 2021, they've been almost double constantly. I thought it was just a revenge travel we saw to Europe, but they haven't come down for some reasons.

This is a pretty good deal.

I've also noticed the cheaper fares to Santiago vs EZE and GIG. It's still a great city to visit.

The Atacama is cool! The mountains are beautiful too! I'm surprised the area hasn't been found by all the Intrasgrammers yet since there's a brand with the same name as the region (Patagonia).

Shhhhh Don't give them ideas. They're already ruining a lot of the good places. I was in Ankor Wat in 2017 and it was already long gone by then.
