I played around with this a little bit on Google Flights. Checked availability for the R/T LAX-JNB and ORD-JNB to see what days the lowest fares were offered. I then went to BA.com and did a multi-city search LAX-JNB and then JNB-ORD on the return. Be careful as the lowest fares that show (like $1500r/t) are using AA flight numbers so you get crappy returns on the EQD's.

I live in Chicago so while I don't mind starting this run on the West Coast and positioning out there the day of departure, I didn't want to end in LAX and then have to fly cross country to get home.

Then why don't you start in Chicago? ORD-JNB-ORD is the same price. This price is available for a lot of cities; there is no reason to do an open jaw to get the price.

That is true - but I gain about $300EQD's starting in LA + I get try try out the LAX Flagship Lounge and the OW 1st Lounges at LAX TBIT (much better than the ORD T5 loune offerings). Of course, YMMV.

I would skip the FL at LAX and just head to the QF FC, assuming you have access. All of the FL's seems to have taken a step down in terms of quality, especially the F+B offerings.
2.69x EQD's on AA so not as good as the OSL/ARN/CPH WT+ fares. My last OSL-LHR-LAX was 3.39x, and I'm waiting on my EU compensation to be "heard" by CEDR as BA cancelled my LAX-LHR since they reassigned our aircraft (a 787 obviously,) and cancelled. Stick to the A380 flights as the upper deck WT+ is good, very quiet, and comfortable if you have a bulkhead or at least the aisle. Some like the window with the "arm rest" storage area, but it depends on what you like.

Yes, the Qantas F lounge at LAX (in TBIT, but it's easy to walk to neighbouring terminal in 10-12mins) is one of the best you'll find anywhere. Good food that's made to order. Absolutely pees all over any AA offering, including any Flagship First (I visited JFK's last week - good, but Qantas LAX and Cathay LHR both beat it).
