if you click through and choose your flights you can look ash the "Fare Rules."
In this case stops were allowed. When I tried to arrange a stop as provided, it changed the pricing. This fare worked on the routings provided on the AA web site. When you tried to create something else allowed by the rules, it increased the price significantly.

You might want to visit the Travel Tools for for more options/knowledge.

Gaining a basic knowledge is helpful in following up on the cheap flight tips in FlyerTalk forums. You can search for fares there, but not ticket them. Indicated fares some times vary a bit, but I like the tool myself.
