Strange!! even for TSA

Last night I landed at DTW at about 11:30pm.
Saw two things as I exited the sterile area that had me shaking my head.

At this hour there was NO one going into the sterile area, just some folks leaving. The first was a young female blue shirt that was "dancing" into and out of the metal detector to get it to beep.

Back and forth, back and forth......beep, beep, beep......

The second was a young male blue shirt who was sitting at the exit to make sure no one was trying to go in the out door. This guy was rapping to himself:

"Booming like a stereo, like a radio, boomin!"

Actually he didn't sound to bad, if you like rap....

The two of these young people should get together, they could form an interesting floor show.........

They and 40,000 of their colleagues already do this every day -- at every airport in America.

It's this kind of behavior that will trump any amount of dollars spent for badges or PR programs in the name of getting respect.

I've always thought that TSA should provide more positive entertainment.

I've worked in some jobs where my coworkers and I have done some equally silly things at 11:30 night, because there was nothing to do. Its harmless.

Too bad you didn't have a video camera. I see youtube written all over this.

Maybe this is a pilot program for a new way to deter terrorists...

Somewhat agree. I still feel like TSO's should display some decorum given that they're working in a highly visible public setting. However, no harm in entertaining yourself as long as you're not neglecting the functions of your job. I have no problem with someone rapping/singing on the job. Dancing around in the WTMD is a bit silly.

FWIW, the TSA is a big step up in professionalism from what existed at some airports before it. That's one area where the TSA had really improved things.

I distinctly remember waiting for a flight around 1999 at a PHL gate near a checkpoint, and being alternately entertained and horrified as the "security" folks manning the checkpoint engaged in play-fighting, giving each other piggy back rides and loudly bantering about which male workers had fathered which of the female workers' children (I believe that was the first time I'd heard the term "baby daddy" used in casual conversation), all while virtually ignoring the x-ray machine and WTMD they were supposed to be monitoring.

Showing off your "moves" in the MMW might relieve the late night boredom...

harmless if you were stocking shelves in Wal Mart or waiting for customers in Mcd's, but these folks are supposed to be inspiring confidence.... IMO a little self respect / control is in order.

I wonder if he knew the airline employee in PHL that was fired for bringing a gun into the sterile area recently. He was a rapper too.

EDIT: Ya think the rapping TSO was a member of the TSA Gangstaz? (PG-13 lyrics)

Not really, because those are our Workfare dollars at waste. They should have been scrubbing a toilet or picking up debris. Oh wait, those are respectable jobs done by respectable individuals...

I believe that going back and forth through the metal detector is a way of resetting it. It's done at the beginning and end of shifts.
As far as the rapper, I complained once about a young man who did it when ever he was unoccupied. I told the supervisor it was very unprofessional, and all I got back was he didn't do it when he was on the line, only at the exit. But still.........
