you may need to re-clear security in LGW if so any duty free bought at EDI needs to be in a checked bag.

Since the OP is not changing planes in the USA on his way to his final destination, then buying at duty free in EDI or LGW should be no problem.

However, if he buys stuff elsewhere in Scotland, and brings it with him to the airport, it's going to need to be checked.

LGW

LGW is my connection roundtrip. We have a 5 hour layover at LGW on the return flight, would that mean I would have to clear security again

I figured I would be putting any liquids in checked baggage considering all the BS with TSA Rules.

No. This is the US system, it doesn't work this way in the UK (or most places). Your bag will be checked all the way to EDI, you will not see it until then. Same for the return - you will check it in at EDI and you will see it in the US when you arrive. There is no opportunity to put things in / take things out at the connecting point unless you only check the bag part of the way and go out to baggage claim and retrieve it, followed by checking it in.

Uneventful

Well were back from Scotland and had a great time

The flight out
Security at MCO - shoes off and on the Belt not in a bin, laptops out and in a bin.All TSA at MCO looked like they were going for the big catch.

LGW- shoes stayed on,laptops out.Security people were so much more relaxed then the TSA at MCO.

The flight back

EDI-checked bags thru to MCO.Security was quick shoes on ,laptops in a bin.again relaxed security people

LGW- Had to get rid of bottled water bought in EDI just to get into the terminal, shoes on laptops in a bin.
Mrs. Nunya gets Gate Groped, the security doing that also got yelled at by a Supervisor for going thru Mrs.Nunyas bag while she was being patted down and not being able to see what the agent was doing.Other then that all security people were relaxed

MCO-Immigration & Customs were a breeze.I could've brought a case of Whisky home with me and they wouldnt have known any better.

Pretty much it seems the TSA is a bunch of uptight ninnys.
